masks made of plaster, gauze, water putty, acrylic, and gloss. 2008

I wore this mask to the Fresh produce art collective bonfire party!
I made this lion mask to fit my face so that I would be able to wear it.. unlike some of the other cat masks I've made which are not shaped to fit a human head. A cat's brow receeds at a shallow angle away from the eyes, whereas a human brow is at a steep angle, like 80 degrees. This mask represents a compromise of the two shapes: narrower eyes, steeper brow, and no cat ears, plus the human face insert is set at a shallow angle to accommodate the cat's brow. This is funny to me. When I wear it and am looking straight ahead, the cat looks downward. When I look up a little, the cat looks straight ahead. It works fairly well. |
